The 400 series is the full custom design series. These gates are begun with a clean sheet of paper and an interview with the client. Often a visit to the setting is necessary to to envision the best design for the client. The interests and style preferences of the individual and family are brought into the design process. Several designs may be submitted for the client to review and discuss. Materials and special finishes are discussed. The 400 series gates are specific to the individual client and their setting.

Here is the first drawing of the Model 401. The design has since been modified to drop the arched rod detail at the bottom and to include a steel "drop shadow" surround of the copper leaves adding strength and reducing the size of the opening at the bottom. (See the photos of the rough frame for details.)

Here are some pictures of the 401 as an unfinished frame. The copper leaves and the glass and copper corner detail will be added after the powder coating process. The attachment will be made with hand-made copper rivets since the durable powder coated finish should not be heated above 300 degrees and even silver soldering would ruin the finish. The hammered copper rivets add a hand worked detail that is very attractive in this piece.

These images are thumbnails so click on them to get a better view. The middle shot shows the corner gusset drilled to accept the copper rivets and the copper bezel holding the green glass pieces. The image on the right is the revised drawing.
