Hinges Hinges can be from a commercial source or made at the studio. Garden gates or walk gates will usually be hinged with custom made hinges from our studio. Certain applications may be better suited to commercially available hinges. In either case, hinges will require between 1.5 to 2.5 inches of space depending on the hinge design and the material use. Most hinges are constructed of mild steel pipe, steel rod, and stainless ball bearings.Drive gates may be mounted on swing hinges for manual opening or may be had with rail mounting system and an automatic opener or openers installed. Automatic opener systems are commercially sourced from the manufacturer with professional installation on site. The space requirement for drive gate hinges or rails varies considerably so there is no rule of thumb with these installations. Roughly you can estimate that manual hinges will take between 2.5 and 4 inches depending on the weight of the gate and the material to which they are attached. Manual gates will swing in and there must be sufficient space for the gates to clear the driveway when they are opened. Rail or sliding gates will need about 4 inches of space on the inside of the gate(s) and space on either side of the gates equal to the width of the gate(s) to accommodate the track for the sliding gate. There must also be room to install the opener and housing (about 30"X24"). Latches Latches and returns are similar to hinges in that they may be custom made or purchased as a commercially available package. They may also be a mix with a custom box and receiver with internals from a lock company. Latches may be as simple as pivoting flat bar or as ornate as custom housing with Baldwin exterior hardware enclosed. Drive gates may also employ auto latching pin systems.
